Historic visit by His Majesty The King to Knaresborough Castle

His Majesty The King recently paid a special visit to Duchy-owned Knaresborough Castle, marking his first visit to Knaresborough as Sovereign. The historic occasion brought together residents, visitors and local schoolchildren, who gathered to welcome The King and were proud to see him visiting the historic town.

Accompanied by Vicki Mathews, Heritage and Restoration Manager at the Duchy of Lancaster, and the castle’s expert tour guides, His Majesty explored the castle ruins and learned more about the site's rich history and architecture.

As part of the tour, The King stopped to admire Knaresborough’s iconic view across the River Nidd, taking in one of Yorkshire’s most celebrated landscapes. He also viewed the town’s War Memorial and the historic 14th-century Courthouse.

The visit also included a stop at the castle’s unique bowling green, situated within the grounds of the ancient fortress, where players were delighted when His Majesty took the time to greet them.

The King's visit was warmly received by the local community, with crowds gathering around the castle grounds to catch a glimpse of His Majesty. With sunshine throughout the day, the atmosphere was vibrant and celebratory, reflecting the pride local people feel for both their town and its historic castle.

Vicki Mathews, Heritage and Restoration Manager at the Duchy of Lancaster, said:
"It was a great privilege to welcome His Majesty to Knaresborough Castle and share the remarkable history of this special site. The castle has a longstanding connection to the Duchy of Lancaster and it was wonderful to see so many local people come together to mark the occasion.”

The Mayor of Knaresborough, Councillor Shan Oakes, said:
"A truly unforgettable day for Knaresborough – one we'll be talking about for many years to come."

Knaresborough Castle has been part of the Duchy of Lancaster estate for centuries and The King's visit provided a special opportunity to celebrate the castle's enduring history and its continuing place at the heart of the community.

The Duchy is custodian to ten Castles across England and Wales.
