Duchy of Lancaster publishes Framework for Conservation Plan

30 June 2026

The Duchy of Lancaster has published its new Framework for Conservation Plan, setting out a long-term strategy for restoring nature and enhancing biodiversity across its estate.

The Framework has been developed as part of the National Estate for Nature (NEN) programme and outlines how the Duchy will integrate nature recovery into the management of its land and property portfolio. It builds on existing conservation work while providing a clear strategic framework to guide future action.

The plan adopts a whole-estate approach to conservation, embedding environmental objectives across the Duchy's landholdings and tenancy arrangements. It identifies priority habitats and opportunities for landscape-scale nature recovery, with a focus on restoring and connecting ecosystems to deliver lasting biodiversity benefits.

The Framework also establishes clear targets and measurable outcomes to monitor progress, while recognising the importance of working in partnership with tenants, local communities and environmental organisations. It aligns with the Duchy's wider environmental ambitions, including strengthening climate resilience, enhancing natural capital and promoting sustainable land management.

As well as setting out the strategic approach, the document includes practical case studies from across the Duchy estate, highlighting conservation projects already being delivered and demonstrating how environmental improvements can be successfully integrated into estate management.

Mark Coombs, Head of Rural at the Duchy of Lancaster, said:
"As long-term stewards of the Duchy estate, we have a responsibility to protect and enhance the natural environment while supporting productive, resilient land management. Our Framework for Conservation Plan provides a clear roadmap for protecting nature across the estate, building on the excellent work already underway with our tenants and partners. By taking a long-term, collaborative approach, we can help restore habitats, strengthen biodiversity and leave the estate in a better condition for future generations."

The publication of the Framework supports the Duchy's commitment to responsible, sustainable stewardship and contributes to the National Estate for Nature programme's ambition of accelerating nature recovery across some of England's largest landholdings.
