The Yorkshire Survey

Filming complements farming on the remote Goathland estate in the Duchy's Yorkshire Survey.
The tiny Victorian railway station in the village of Goathland in the National Park moors has a starring role as Hogsmeade Station, the stop for Hogwarts School, in the Harry Potter films. The moors and common land also provide the setting for Yorkshire Television's popular Heartbeat series.
In addition to Goathland, the Yorkshire Survey includes the ancient inheritances of Pontefract, Pickering, Cloughton, Scalby and Tickhill. The total area of the Survey is 6,920 hectares (17,100 acres) which includes Goathland Moor, covering 4,185 hectares (10,340 acres).
The main estates lie between Pickering and Scarborough, and include land bought since the Second World War. They comprise 20 farms which are mainly stock and arable. The Pontefract estate, now much diminished in size, lies on the edge of the modern town.
The Yorkshire Survey includes several important historic properties, including Pickering Castle and Pontefract Castle, where King Richard II was imprisoned and died in 1400. Under the guardianship of Wakefield Metropolitan District Council and English Heritage respectively, they are open to the public. The remains of a castle at Tickhill, near Doncaster, enclose a house which is let to a private tenant. |
