Administrative Duties of the Duchy of Lancaster
Since the fourteenth century, the Duchy of Lancaster has exercised special authority in the County Palatine, the area now covered by Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside. This role includes the appointment of High Sheriffs and other posts. Until 31 March 2005 it also included the appointment of magistrates.
The Duchy is also actively involved with a number of charitable, educational and other organisations with which it has geographic and historical associations.
The Duchy Council, the body which manages the affairs of the Duchy of Lancaster, carries out these official functions in the name of The Queen, in right of her Duchy of Lancaster.
This section contains a profile of the Duchy Council and its members. It explains the Duchy's administrative role in the County Palatine, and profiles the other appointments for which the Duchy of Lancaster is responsible.
